Mindfulness Meditation as defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn is the process of paying attention on purpose in the present moment non-judgmentally. It makes you more aware of deeply ingrained patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions. Mindfulness allows you to be more present and to observe yourself from a place of compassion and curiosity. It helps manage emotions, cravings, thoughts, and can help you put your life in a positive direction. It is essential for changing your life significantly.
Change your thoughts, change your life. CBT and DBT are proven psychotherapeutic modalities to help shift thinking, behavior and beliefs that may be undermining your life. We use CBT to challenge “automatic” or “catastrophic” thoughts and hence alleviate negative moods. We use DBT to access greater control over our emotions, improve distress tolerance and relationships. Mindfulness meditation is an integral part of this therapy.
Transcendental Meditation is a simple, effortless, natural technique that provides deep rest to the nervous system. Utilizing a sound or “mantra” which has no meaning, it allows the mind to transcend thought and get to a peaceful place within consciousness. TM does not use concentration or contemplation methods. This form of meditation can relieve stress, addictive habits, improve concentration and job performance, lower high blood pressure, and generally improve psychological conditions. It requires no change in lifestyle and is not a religion or belief system.
Formulated by Fritz Perls in the 1960s, Gestalt Therapy takes its name from “Gestalt” meaning “whole” or “pattern”. Combining Freudian psychology with existentialism and Zen Buddhism, Perls invented a therapeutic method that asks “How” rather than “Why”. Gestalt focuses on the body as the repository of memory and attempts to elicit an overall psychological healing based on mind-body relationships. Gestalt techniques include the “empty chair” which utilizes dialogue to resolve relationship issues. Ultimately, we find our relationships are only different parts of who we really are.
When we experience challenging emotions, our breathing becomes restricted and we tend to become tight and tense. These emotions become locked in the body. Hypnotherapy is about helping clients release and heal emotions that are preventing them from living a better life. After guiding clients into a relaxed, meditative state, I use guided meditation techniques to help you access and change negative emotions. New, positive thoughts, feelings, and images can then be integrated into your behavior and can result in smoking cessation, weight loss, and pain management benefits.
